Pause and take a deep breath.


It’s nice to get your mind off the clock every once in a while, even if only for a split second. The hectic life of a small business owner can keep your thoughts constantly racing ahead. I find it helpful to give myself a break from the chaos, relax, and reflect for a moment on life’s little victories. Not only is it a great way to keep yourself upbeat and motivated, It can be fun to note how many small things can unexpectedly make you smile in a day. The more you notice the more they seem to crop up. It can feel like a breath of fresh air to focus on small scale things for a change rather than the big picture deadlines, needs, and shortcomings.


For example, the other day I spilt a dab of coffee on my white shirt, which was a bummer that could have dampened my day. Lucky for me, the workday was over and I was already on my way out the door –whew! I took it straight to the washing machine and no one ever had to see the stain. So, in the spirit of small and unexpected victories such as that, the We Spark Growth team decided to spend National Smile Week on the WSG 90-Day Boost Your Business and Health Challenge recording all our little victories.


Here’s what we found:


  1. The song I had stuck in my head was the first one to play on shuffle.

Talk about ‘off to a good start,’ I was in the gym for the first time in a long time (thanks to the WSG 90-Day Challenge). I opened my Spotify workout playlist of over 100 songs, hit “shuffle,” and the first song to play was the exact song I had stuck in my head.  Never tell me the odds!


  1. Woke up naturally right before my alarm went off.


On a similar note, one morning I slept past my alarm and woke up over 2 hours late for an important meeting. As I was frantically getting ready, I woke up back in bed and realized that not only was it all a dream but I still had 4 more hours to sleep.


  1. On Friday our coworker brought in her home grown corn for everyone to share –double win!

Sharon Planer from Pianist for Parties offices with us at WorkAround: shared office environment. At the end of the day on Friday she surprised us with some corn from her garden.  What a great way to end the week –and yes, it was delicious.


  1. Poured my perfect crème to coffee ratio in the first cup of the day.

It doesn’t happen often, but when it does it’s magical. It also only ever seems to happen when I’m not trying.


  1. Walking the pup around the lake on an unexpectedly serene evening.

Of course we have to end the list with an ‘aww’ picture. This beautiful silver lab is named Nala. You’d probably never guess but she loves to play in the water.
